Beaujolais Nouveau: The French Wine That Can’t Wait to Be Enjoyed!
A celebration of the harvest, French tradition, and the joy of young wine
Every November, something rather wonderful happens in the world of wine. While most winemakers are patiently waiting for their wines to mature, the people of Beaujolais, France, are throwing a party!
Welcome to Beaujolais Nouveau, one of the wine world’s most cheerful traditions.
What Exactly Is Beaujolais Nouveau?
Beaujolais Nouveau is a young red wine produced in the Beaujolais region of France, just south of Burgundy.
Made from the Gamay grape, this wine is harvested, fermented, bottled, and released in a matter of weeks rather than months or years.
The result? A fresh, fruity, lively red wine that captures the spirit of the year’s harvest.
Unlike more serious, age-worthy reds, Beaujolais Nouveau isn’t meant to sit in your cellar gathering dust. It’s meant to be opened, shared, and enjoyed while it’s young!
Why Is the Third Thursday in November So Special?
Every year, on the third Thursday of November, Beaujolais Nouveau is officially released.
In 2026, that day falls on November 19th.
The celebration became internationally famous thanks in large part to French wine merchant Georges Duboeuf, whose enthusiastic promotion helped turn a regional harvest tradition into a worldwide event.
For decades, wine lovers have celebrated the arrival of the new vintage with the famous proclamation:
Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!
The new Beaujolais has arrived!
What Does Beaujolais Nouveau Taste Like?
Imagine a glass bursting with fresh red berries, juicy cherries, raspberries, and sometimes even hints of banana or bubblegum!
Those playful aromas are often associated with a winemaking technique called carbonic maceration, in which whole grape clusters ferment in a carbon dioxide-rich environment.
The technique helps produce wines with vibrant fruit flavors, gentle tannins, and a wonderfully approachable personality.
Beaujolais Nouveau is typically light-bodied, refreshing, and best served slightly chilled.
What Foods Pair Well With Beaujolais Nouveau?
One of the great pleasures of this wine is its versatility at the dinner table.
Try it with:
And here’s a little secret: Beaujolais Nouveau can be a delightful Thanksgiving wine. Its bright acidity and light body make it a friendly companion to many of the flavors on a holiday table.
Is Beaujolais Nouveau the Same as Other Beaujolais Wines?
Not quite!
While Beaujolais Nouveau celebrates youthful freshness, the region also produces beautiful, more complex wines, including the celebrated Cru Beaujolais from villages such as Morgon, Fleurie, and Moulin-à-Vent.
These wines demonstrate just how expressive and sophisticated the Gamay grape can be.
Think of Beaujolais Nouveau as the lively opening celebration of a region with much more to discover.
